Community Service: Udayana International Relations in Action with Griya Luhu—Community Empowerment via Digital Waste Management.

GIANYAR, May 14, 2025 –

The waste problem is no longer just a matter of "throwing it in the bin"; it is about managing it with a technological touch. This was the spirit brought by the faculty and students of the International Relations (HI) Study Program, FISIP Udayana University, during their collaborative community service visit to Pejeng Kelod Village, Gianyar.

A Digital Touch in the Community

In partnership with their strategic partner, Griya Luhu, the Udayana University team championed the theme: "Community Empowerment through Digital-Based Waste Management." This activity was far more than a formal visit; it was a concrete step to ensure that digital waste bank systems reach the grassroots level—the household.

Field Analysis: Measuring Sorting Success

Before heading into the field, students and lecturers were equipped with specific indicators by the Griya Luhu team. They learned to identify households that have successfully implemented waste sorting and mastered the use of the digital waste bank application.

Accompanied by Griya Luhu representatives, the team walked through the village streets to engage directly with residents. Using a door-to-door method, they conducted in-depth data collection regarding:

  • Consistency: How regularly residents sort organic and inorganic waste.

  • Effectivity: The effectiveness of using the digital waste bank app to record "waste savings."

  • Technical Challenges: Real-world obstacles faced by the community.

Small Practices, Big Impact

These small steps in Pejeng Kelod Village prove that synergy between academia and the community can create real change. Through this collaborative spirit, waste management is no longer just an environmental obligation, but a modern lifestyle that provides added economic value for village communities.
